MONTEREY-SAN BENITO COUNTIES RED CROSS OPENS EVACUATION SITE/SHELTER AT GREENFIELD HIGH SCHOOL

Salinas, CA, Friday, July 11, 2008 – The Monterey-San Benito Counties Chapter of the American Red Cross is opening an Evacuation Site / Shelter at Greenfield High School Cafeteria at 2025 El Camino Real in Greenfield for residents under voluntary evacuation order due to the Basin Complex fire burning in the Los Padres National Forest .

The SPCA for Monterey County is operating an emergency animal evacuation shelter adjacent to the American Red Cross shelter to house evacuated animals. For more information or assistance with pet and livestock evacuation, please contact The SPCA at 831-373-2631.

All American Red Cross disaster assistance is free, a gift of the American people.  The Monterey-San Benito Counties Chapter of the American Red Cross is not a government agency and receives no national, federal or even local United Way Funding.  The Chapter relies totally upon the generosity of the local community to exist.  Those interested in supporting the work of the local chapter to help families like these and others recover when disaster strikes are encouraged to make a monetary contribution to the Chapter’s Local Disaster Relief fund by calling 424-4824 in Salinas, 375-5730 in Monterey or 636-2100 in Hollister.  Internet users may log onto the Chapter’s website at www.montereyarc.org to make a secure online contribution.

CARMEL, CALIF. – July 2, 2008 – The American REd Cross today opened a shelter for the hundreds of families affected by the Basic Complex Fire currently sweeing the California coast near Big Sur.  The shelter is located at Carmel Middle School at 4380 Carmel Valley Road in Carmel.  The shelter has been opend to provide food, a safe place to rest, counrseling and health assessments to people affected by the mandatory evacuations along Highway 1 between Andrew Molera and Limekiln State Parks.  The Shelter will remain open until residents are allowed to return to their homes. 

The evacuation center located at Pacific Valley School at 69325 Highway 1 in Big Sur has been closed.  The Carmel Area Chapter  along with the Monterey-San Benito Counties Chapter has deployed teams of volunteers and supplies, including cots and blankets, snacks and meals, to respond to the emergency needs of evacuated individuals. The Red Cross remains on alert and will open additional evacuation centers or shelters should additional evacuations be issued.  Residents should contact CalFire at (805) 961-5770 for information on whether your home is in an evacuation area.  Any residents who are unable to remain safely in their homes may evacuate to a Red Cross evacuation center or shelter.  For information on evacuation centers and locations or to request Red Cross assistance, contact the Carmel Area Chapter at (831) 624-6921.

The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) of Monterey County is assisting with housing pets from evacuated areas and will be on-site at Carmel Middle School . Residents should contact the SPCA for additional information at (831) 373-2631 in Monterey or (831) 422-4721 in Salinas . After-hours information regarding animal sheltering is available at (831) 646-5534.

Friday, June 27, 2008 -- The Monterey-San Benito Counties Chapter of the American Red Cross' Evacuation Site at Greenfield Elementary School at 490 El Camino Real in Greenfield will be open for assistance until 8pm Friday evening.  Individuals or families requiring disaster related assistance due to the Indians Fire beyond 8pm on Friday are asked to call 831-809-5861.
